The County of Orange Announces the Pavement Rehabilitation of Newport Avenue, from Wass Street to Hyde Park Drive
For Immediate Release April 27, 2009
Contact: Debbie Kroner Public Information Officer 714-834-5373
SANTA ANA, CA. – The County of Orange has been granted $1.84M in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding towards the repair of Newport Avenue, from Wass Street to Hyde Park Drive.
Newport Avenue is classified as a primary arterial highway on the County’s Master Plan and includes four lanes of through traffic (two lanes in each direction), along with curbs, gutters and sidewalks. The proposed project will repair deteriorated portions of this approximately two mile segment of roadway pavement, overlay the entire road and construct Americans with Disability Act (ADA) compliant curb access ramps at roadway intersections. A portion of the project lies within the City of Tustin corporate limits, and the city and county have agreed to the scope and extent of the work.
The project will not widen the roadway, or otherwise impact any of the existing parkway trees, block walls or any resident landscaping along the project limits.
The asphalt to be used in this project is warm mix asphalt. It is produced at the asphalt plant at lower temperatures than normal hot mix asphalt. This allows for a reduction in fuel consumption at the plant and savings in energy costs. Reduced Greenhouse gas emissions and improved air quality are expected during construction. Improved workability of the warm mix could lead to a longer pavement life.
The County anticipates awarding the project to the low bid construction contractor on March 2, 2010, with construction to begin in mid to late April of 2010. The roadway rehabilitation work should be completed by the end of August 2010. Residents, schools and businesses along the project limits will be notified before the actual start of the work. The contractor will be directed to provide access at all times and to coordinate accordingly, to private driveways and streets during the work.
For more information on this project please contact the County’s Construction office at 714-567-7800.
