Huntington Beach Channel / Talbert Channel Sheet Pile Repair Project

BACKGROUND

The Huntington Beach Channel and Talbert Channel Sheet Pile Repair Project is designed to improve flood protection for surrounding Huntington Beach communities.

The project consists of installing 17,049 linear feet of new steel sheet piles adjacent to the existing steel sheet piles that line the sides of both flood control channels.  Portions of the existing wall system are deteriorating and these improvements will form an extremely durable steel wall that will strengthen the flood control channels and enhance flood protection.

The project will also address minor surface drainage issues by replacing the existing concrete “v-ditch” water drainage system with a new curb and gutter where new sheet piles are being installed. 

Location

Improvements will be completed along with the following flood control channel areas:

Huntington Beach Channel
South of Adams Avenue to east of Magnolia Street (approx. 3.1 miles), and;

Talbert Channel
South of Yorktown Avenue to west of Brookhurst Street (approx. 3 miles).

Additional Project Details

Sheet piles are long structural sections of steel with a vertical interlocking system that creates a continuous wall. Interlocked sheet piles form a wall that is water-resistant and are commonly used for the construction of retaining walls and seawalls.

  • Residents will see large equipment along with the channel project areas, including a crane and specialized equipment to greatly reduce noise and vibration.
  • Residents may experience an increase in construction-related noise during working hours.
  • Construction activities will move along the project area as various activities are completed.
  • Your safety is our top priority! Please stay out of the project area and observe all project safety signs, barriers and personnel.

Anticipated Construction Duration

Work Days/Hours
Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. 

The construction schedule is tentative and subject to change due to weather and other factors.
Occasional Saturday work may occur as needed in order to complete critical activities.
